The well-planned life of forty-three-year-old Marc Cohn, MD, a wealthy, egocentric, and talented South Florida plastic surgeon, is upended when his wife tragically dies and he is suddenly left responsible for Max, his angry and depressed fourteen-year-old son. A ten-day trip to Alaska for the bat-mitzvah of his twin nieces becomes the setting for life-changing experiences for Max, who emerges from his problems by working with Iditarod sled dogs; and for Marc who, in this dramatic setting, begins reengaging with his Judaism and examining aspects of his life that have been dormant for decades.
The human catalyst for much of what happens is Rabbi Chani Kahn, a young, beautiful, and talented widow (and pilot) who is building a vibrant Jewish community in Resurrection Bay. The mutual attraction between Chani and Marc is powerful, but must transcend many of her strongly held beliefs and family skeletons. In the course of this book Marc makes significant personal and professional decisions that have a profound impact on people in Florida, Alaska, Israel, and Africa.
This novel, showcasing the importance of healing and love, is an intriguing blend of history, theology, and romance and its relationship to loss, redemption, reconciliation, and spirituality.

I loved this wonderful story of one man's journey from being a narcissistic, money hungry, showman, detached father, and non believer on his path from literally one end of the spectrum, as a grieving widower, to finding his true meaning in life. This book takes you for a ride that even I did not predict. From Florida, to Alaska, to Israel, and Africa and back again. All to find his true purpose in life. It also gives you a sense of wonderment as you, the reader are taken along for the ride. Along the way you learn what it means to find one's self in their religion, and rise above all the wrongs one has done, maybe coincidently, and righting them. I loved all the visual, spiritual, and emotional milestones that Dr. Marc Cohn achieves as he passes though his grief, and personal pain to become a good person, father, brother, Uncle, friend and finds love, by giving and opening himself up to receiving love through giving of himself. As a practicing Nurse, I have come into contact with both kinds of Doctors, and Marc is my hero.As a practicing Jew, I felt his pain, his sorrow, and his love. Seth Goldsmith, you should be proud of your book.

I enjoyed reading this novel. Loved the characters living in Alaska- reminded me a little of "Northern Exposure". I disliked Marc Cohen from the get-go. Actually wanted to smack him ) I really did not want to like him; unfortunately, watching him change throughout novel made me change my mind.
What a wonderful read! I had high expectations of the novel from the moment that I saw its title. I knew that it would possess incredible depth and profundity while pulling at my heart from beginning to end. I do not want to give the story away, but I feel that it was crafted with great skill and insightful character development. If I had one con regarding the book, ii would be the distraction of grammatical errors and some editing/ context errors. Kudos to the author. I hope that he is working on a sequel.
This is a wonderful book. I enjoyed reading it. I felt as if I knew the characters. The author reveals Alaska, the art of the musher, the internal workings of a successful synagogue, how to be Jewish, and the importance of surviving in a community. There is great light in this book from that of the Western Wall prayer in Israel to the sunlight on the snow of Alaska. More I loved about this book was the acceptance and reverence for knowledge, education and the elderly wise man or tzadik.
The story was beautiful and moved from the main character being somewhat unlikable to watching him turn into a very honorable man, physician, husband, father, brother and member of the Jewish community. It was lovely to see these various, dispersed members of the Jewish world work so well together for the benefit of each other and those in need throughout the world.
My only criticism is that I wish the editing would have been tighter in terms of spelling, some dropped words, etc. This would make the book even more enjoyable. Overall I found this book to be charming and a lovely change of pace!
I just finished reading "The Rabbi of Resurrection Bay," and want to recommend it. Dr. Goldsmith has written and published numerous non-fiction articles and books but, to the best of my knowledge, this is his first book of fiction. Writing fiction is a totally different craft than writing nonfiction, and the transition is not always successfully made. In my opinion, Dr. Goldsmith has pulled it off with skill and creativity. "The Rabbi of Resurrection Bay," is an entertaining and sensitive love story involving two well-drawn characters, both of whom had previously successful marriages that ended tragically. The magic is in the narrative that causes the reader to care deeply about these lovers as they struggle with the challenges of remaking their professional and personal lives. Can an affluent and powerful plastic surgeon from Florida and a beautiful and dedicated woman Rabbi from Alaska overcome the 4000 miles separating them, the emotions of their past loves, and the many other obstacles to the joining of their lives? The description of Judaism and Jewish practice in Seward, Alaska adds a unique dimension to the tale. This is a very enjoyable read and I hope for more great fiction from Seth Goldsmith.
